Student Sensor Projects on Display at VSSA STEM Showcase

Student Sensor Projects on Display at VSSA STEM Showcase

On May 25, 2022, students from Ms. Kari Bangston’s STEM classes presented their sensor projects to parents/caregivers, mentors, and the community as part of the Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy (VSSA) STEM Showcase. Some examples of student projects include: a UV system that can help determine when you should apply sunscreen; temperature and humidity sensors that can help determine how and when to wax your skis; sensors that measure temperature, humidity, and soil moisture for a year-round greenhouse; and a system that measures air temperature and soil moisture to determine fire danger - and also includes Big Floyd (the Yeti school mascot).

The students were tasked to define and solve a problem in their community with Micro:Bit sensor technology. Students worked in pairs to code their sensor display to respond to the environment. For the showcase, students demonstrated their sensor display and designed an infographic to explain how the sensors work and what data their display is communicating.

Students did a great job explaining their projects, including what they enjoyed the most and how they were able to overcome challenges. Different careers that use sensors were also highlighted and included examples from engineering, construction, and the medical profession. Students described how sensors are all around us and play an important part in our everyday lives.
