EdTech Update - Wednesday 9/2/2020

 UPDATES/ANNOUNCEMENTS (Sept 2, 2020)

GOOGLE’S DEFAULT SHARE SETTING IS SET TO “RESTRICTED”

Google has changed the default Share setting to “Restricted - Only people added can open with this link.”  (The default was previously “Eagle County Schools.”)  To share documents with colleagues and/or students, make sure you CLICK ON the “Change link to Eagle County Schools” hyperlink at the bottom of the share window before copying the link:

KAMI STUDENT ACCOUNTS UPGRADE UPDATE

Some student accounts were still on the free version of Kami at the beginning of this year.  Kami has resolved this issue as of yesterday, so all students should now be on our district license.  Please let us know if you have any questions about this!

FLIPGRID ERROR MESSAGE IN SCHOOLOGY

If you try to embed your Flipgrid topic into your Schoology course as a link, your students will get an error message when they try to record.  To prevent this from happening, you have two choices:

  1. Add Flipgrid as a link that “displays in a new window.”  To do this, add the link as normal, and make sure to click on the “display” icon near the bottom of the edit screen so that when you hover over the icon, it says “Display in new window.”

  1. Add Flipgrid as an external tool.  To do this, choose File/Link/External Tool from the Add Materials menu.  Then choose External Tool and complete the fields as prompted.

MUTE TAB EXTENSION

Do you ever participate in multiple Google Meet meetings and wish you could turn off the volume to one of the meetings without turning it off for another?  Try a Mute Tab extension, which will allow you to turn off the volume of a single tab without turning off the volume of the others.  There are several extensions that do this, but here’s one we’ve tried and seems to work well: Mute Tab extension.

🌟 Tip of the Week

EMBED YOUR GOOGLE SLIDES PRESENTATION IN SCHOOLOGY

If you would like your students to view a Google Slides presentation (or any other Google file) directly in your Schoology course, you can embed it in a page!  This allows students to view your file without ever leaving the Schoology course.  Also, changes you make to your Google file will automatically update in the embedded view.  See example below:

To do this, click on Add Materials → Add Page.  Then click on this icon: and choose Google Drive Resource App:

Once you have located the appropriate Google file, click on the checkbox next to it and click on Import → Import Embed at the top of the window.  If you want the file to appear without requiring the student to click on the page, make sure you click on the display icon at the bottom of the window so it shows “Display Inline”:

IN CASE YOU DIDN’T SEE IT BEFORE...

SYNCING GRADES FROM SCHOOLOGY TO POWERSCHOOL

If you want to set up grade syncing from Schoology to PowerSchool, you must follow the instructions on the following guides.  Please reach out to the EdTech team if you need further support in setting this up.

Step 1: Schoology Gradebook Setup Guide

Step 2: Grade Sync from Schoology to PowerSchool Setup Guide

*You must follow BOTH guides above to sync your grades!

NEW TECHNOLOGY WEBSITE:

We have redesigned our Technology Website (https://technology.eagleschools.net) in order to better provide targeted information for teachers, students, and parents.  On the site you will see a new Digital Learning section that contains information previously found on the ECS Learns pages.  Be sure to check out the new site for instructional guides, video tutorials, & student/teacher access information.

INTERNET HOTSPOTS:

The ECS Technology department does have internet hotspots available for students that need assistance with internet access for remote and blended learning.  Staff must request a hot spot on behalf of a student by completing this form, and submit a help ticket.  We understand this is a two step process but it helps get the hotspot into the student’s hands much more quickly.

☠️ GOOGLE CAST FOR EDUCATION IS GONE ☠️

Google will discontinue the Google Cast for Education Chrome extension as of August 2020.  This extension will be automatically uninstalled.  For now, we recommend teachers use the 10’ HDMI cable that is connected to the Portable Wireless Display to display their screen or the screens of their students.
